There's no single best panel. Most panels sold for UK homes in 2026 are 450 to 485 W and 21% to 24% efficient, and the gaps between good brands are small. What matters is how a panel suits your roof, the warranties, and who stands behind them.
Nearly every home panel today is monocrystalline silicon. The differences are in how the cells are built:
| Type | Typical efficiency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mono PERC | about 21.3% to 21.7% | The older mainstream type, now being overtaken |
| N-type TOPCon | about 23.5% | Overtook PERC as the most sold type in 2024 |
| Heterojunction (HJT) | about 22.6% to 23.5% | Loses less output in heat; some carry long output warranties |
| Back-contact (for example ABC, HPBC) | about 24.1% to 24.3% | Highest efficiency; no visible wires on the front |
Industry averages from the ITRPV 2026 roadmap, as reported by PV Tech, and manufacturer datasheets.
These are examples from current manufacturer datasheets, to show how panels differ. They aren't a ranking.
| Panel | Type | Power | Efficiency | Product warranty | Output warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIKO Neostar 2P54 | Back-contact | 450 to 485 W | up to 24.3% | 15 years, extendable to 25 | 30 years |
| Trina Vertex S+ | N-type TOPCon | 450 to 475 W | up to 23.8% | 25 years | 30 years, 87.4% at the end |
| LONGi LR7-54HTH | N-type | 455 to 465 W | 22.8% | 15 years | 25 years, 89.4% at the end |
| REC Alpha Pure-RX | Heterojunction | 450 to 470 W | 22.6% | 20 years (25 with REC's ProTrust) | 25 years, 92% at the end |
| LONGi Hi-MO 5m | Mono PERC (older) | 415 W | 21.3% | 12 years | 25 years |
Notice how much the product warranty varies, from 12 to 25 years, while efficiency only differs by a few percentage points.
Ask each installer which panel they're quoting, for the datasheet, and why. A good answer explains how the panel suits your roof. Compare the product warranty and who backs it as carefully as the price.
We name the exact panel, inverter and any battery in your quote, with their datasheets and warranties, so you can compare like for like with other quotes.
Back-contact panels lead in 2026, at around 24% for the best home modules, followed by N-type TOPCon and heterojunction at around 23.5%.
If your roof is small, yes, because you fit more power in the same space. On a large roof, a slightly less efficient panel with a strong warranty can be better value.
Monocrystalline panels, which is nearly all panels sold now. Among them, N-type TOPCon, heterojunction and back-contact panels all perform well in UK conditions.
Product warranties range from 12 to 25 years, and performance warranties usually 25 or 30 years, guaranteeing 87% to 92% of original output. The panels we fit come with a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty.
There isn't one answer. Compare the warranty, the manufacturer's track record and UK support, and how the panel suits your roof.
