How solar PV works

Solar PV panels turn daylight into electricity for your home. Here's where it goes.

  1. Panels on your roof

Turn daylight into direct current (DC) electricity.

  2. The inverter

Converts it to alternating current (AC), the kind your sockets and appliances use.

  3. Your home

Uses the electricity your panels make first.

  4. The grid

Takes the excess electricity you don't use, and you can be paid for it.

Add a battery, if you like

It stores the spare electricity for the evening, instead of sending it all to the grid.

Cloudy days? Panels don't need direct sunlight. They still generate on cloudy days, just less, and produce the most in spring and summer.

In the evening? When the panels make less, you buy from the grid as usual, unless you have a battery.

Is my roof suitable?

Most roofs can take solar panels. How much solar power you'll generate depends on which way the roof faces, what shades it and how much space there is. These are the things we look at when we design your system, and the independent technical survey checks them in person once you've signed.

Which way it faces

NESW
  • South-facing roofs catch the most sun.
  • East and west-facing roofs work well too, producing around 15 to 20% less energy. An east and west split often generates more evenly through the day.
  • North-facing roofs aren't recommended by the Energy Saving Trust.

Figures: Energy Saving Trust.

What shades it

Trees, chimneys and neighbouring buildings can shade panels for part of the day, which cuts their energy output. We look at where shade falls and design around it. Where it can't be avoided, optimisers can limit its effect on the rest of the panels, at an extra cost.

Its size and condition

The roof space decides how many panels fit: the Energy Saving Trust says a typical 4.5 kWp home system covers 20 to 30 square metres. The technical survey also checks the roof's age and condition, so it can carry the panels for the decades they'll be there.

Your fuse board and wiring

The technical survey looks at where the inverter and any battery will go, and whether anything electrical needs moving first, before installation day.

How many solar panels do you need?

It depends on your energy usage and how much roof you have. As a rough guide, the Energy Saving Trust suggests:

  • About 4 panelsMid-terrace

  • About 8 panelsEnd-terrace or semi-detached

  • About 12 panelsSmall detached

  • About 16 panelsLarge detached

Ofgem's figure for a typical household is 2,500 kWh a year. We work out the right system size for your home at your free consultation.

What solar panels cost

Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own. The Energy Saving Trust puts the average home solar panel system, about 4.5 kWp and without a battery, at around £7,600 to install.

What your price depends on

  • How many panels fit on your roof, and how many you need for your usage
  • Whether you add a battery now, or leave room to add one later
  • The inverter that suits your system
  • Access to the roof, which affects the scaffolding

Costs are falling. Government figures show median installed costs per kW for home systems fell by 8 to 9% in 2025/26, after allowing for inflation.

The main ongoing cost is the inverter, which usually needs replacing after about 12 years.

0% VAT

Solar panels and batteries fitted to homes are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate is due to go back to 5%.

Comparing quotes? Check each one gives:

  • The system size
  • The panel and inverter models
  • The warranties

So you're comparing like with like. Your written quote from us shows the full cost, and if you'd like to compare panels alone against panels and a battery, just ask and we'll price both.

Energy bills, payback and your carbon footprint

Every unit of solar electricity you use is one you don't buy from your supplier, so your electricity bills come down, and the Smart Export Guarantee pays for what you export.

About 9 yearsfor a typical solar panel system to pay for itself in London, including export payments

Estimates: Energy Saving Trust.

Use it, don't just sell it

You're paid less for a unit you export than you pay for one you buy, so you save more when you use your own electricity, for example by running appliances in the day or adding a battery.

In a Which? survey, a quarter of solar panel owners said their panels met half to three-quarters of their yearly electricity use. When we go through your quote, we'll talk you through the potential savings for your home.

Adding a battery system

A solar battery stores excess solar energy from the day for the evening, or charges at off-peak hours on a cheaper overnight tariff. We fit solar and battery systems together, or add battery storage to your panels later.

When Solar panels only Solar panels and a battery
In the day Your home runs on your solar power first Your home runs on your solar power first
Spare power Goes to the grid, and you can be paid for it Charges your battery, then any left goes to the grid
In the evening You buy from the grid as usual Your battery powers the house, and it can charge overnight on a cheaper tariff

From first call to switch-on

The whole process usually takes two to three weeks. Bigger systems that need network approval can take longer.

  1. A free consultation

By phone or at your home. Tell us how you use electricity and what you'd like from solar. No obligation.

  2. Your written quote

We design your system and send a written quote with the full price and no hidden fees, then talk you through it.

  3. Technical survey

Once you've signed, an independent technical surveyor checks where your panels and cables will go. It's included in your price.

  4. Paperwork and approval

Our office orders your kit and books your date. Systems over 3.68 kW need the network operator's consent first: we apply while your survey is booked, and it can take from a couple of days to 90.

  5. Installation day

Scaffold up, panels on, system wired in and switched on. Most homes are done in a day.

  6. Handover and aftercare

We notify your electricity network, email your handover pack within 7 working days, and stay on hand afterwards.

Selling spare electricity: the Smart Export Guarantee

When your panels make more electricity than your home is using, the surplus energy goes to the grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers pay you for that exported energy.

To be paid, you need

  • A system installed by an MCS certified solar panel installer, which we are
  • A smart meter that records your exports
  • An export tariff. You can choose any supplier's, not just your own supplier's

Questions people ask

How much does solar panel installation cost in the UK?

Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own. The Energy Saving Trust puts the average home system, about 4.5 kWp and without a battery, at around £7,600. Your price comes in a written quote after a free consultation.

Is it still worth getting solar panels in the UK?

For most homes with a suitable roof, yes. Counting export payments, the Energy Saving Trust expects a typical system to pay for itself in about 9 years in London and 10 to 11 in Manchester, and the panels to last 25 years or more.

Should I buy solar panels now or wait?

Solar panels and batteries fitted to homes are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is due to go back to 5%. Beyond that, the sooner panels are on the roof, the sooner they start cutting your bills.

How many solar panels do I need?

Enough to cover as much of your use as your roof allows. The Energy Saving Trust's rough guide runs from about 4 panels on a mid-terrace to 16 on a large detached house. We work it out properly for your home, rather than selling a standard package.

How long do solar panels last?

The Energy Saving Trust says panels should last 25 years or more. Ours come with a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty, which guarantees they keep producing a minimum level of power.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight, not just direct sun, so they still produce on cloudy days, just less than in bright sunshine.

Do I need planning permission?

Not for most houses in England, where rooftop panels are permitted development within size limits. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas have extra rules. Our planning permission guide has the detail.

How long does it take to install solar panels?

One day for most homes, once the scaffolding is up. Afterwards we notify your distribution network operator, the company that runs your local electricity network, and email your handover pack within 7 working days.

Do bigger systems need the network operator's approval?

Yes, if the inverter is over 3.68 kW on an ordinary single-phase supply. We apply for you before fitting, and it can take from a couple of days to 90: that's down to the network operator and how much grid capacity is free. Our 10-panel Fox ESS system stays under the limit, so it only needs a notice after fitting. Sometimes a bigger system is approved with a limit on how much it can send back to the grid. On an 8 kW system limited to 3.68 kW, for example, the panels still power your home as normal; you just export less at any one time.

Do solar panels add value to your home?

Possibly a little. Solar Energy UK's analysis puts the average uplift at 0.9% to 2%, but most estate agents Which? spoke to said panels don't typically add value, though they can make a home easier to sell.

What does PV mean?

PV stands for photovoltaic, meaning the panels turn light into electricity. Solar thermal panels are different: they heat water instead.
