Lincolnshire homes and solar

Rural Lincolnshire has a lot of detached houses with big roofs. In West Lindsey, the district around Gainsborough, half of all households (49.6%) live in detached houses, according to the 2021 Census, more than double the England figure of 23%. Lincoln itself is different: nearly 30% of homes are terraced and about 20% are flats.

  • Farms

Farms are a big part of the county too, and their barns and sheds often make better solar roofs than the farmhouse. We fit solar on farm buildings too, where the building is structurally sound.

Which council handles your planning

  • The county and its districts

Lincolnshire county area: planning is handled by the district councils: West Lindsey (Gainsborough), City of Lincoln, North Kesteven, South Kesteven, East Lindsey, Boston and South Holland.

  • Unitary councils

North Lincolnshire Council (Scunthorpe, Brigg) and North East Lincolnshire Council (Grimsby, Cleethorpes) are unitary councils.

For most houses, rooftop solar panels don't need planning permission. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas have extra rules. Lincoln has 11 conservation areas, including the Cathedral and City Centre, and Gainsborough has three.

Councils are changing. The government has decided to replace Lincolnshire's county and district councils with a new "Lincoln Council" and a "Lincolnshire Council" from 1 April 2028, subject to Parliament. North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire stay as they are.

Two network operators

Northern Lincolnshire

Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid runs the network in northern Lincolnshire, including Scunthorpe and Grimsby.

Further south

National Grid Electricity Distribution

National Grid Electricity Distribution runs it further south, including, as far as we can tell, Lincoln.

Gainsborough sits near the boundary, so we check your operator from your postcode. The process is the same either way, and we handle it.

Grants and local schemes

Closed 24 July 2026

Lincolnshire County Council and North East Lincolnshire Council both ran council-backed group-buying schemes for solar and batteries in 2026. Registration for both closed on 24 July 2026.

The Warm Homes: Local Grant, for lower-income households, covers Lincoln, West Lindsey, North Kesteven, South Kesteven, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire through the Midlands Net Zero Hub. East Lindsey has its own funding, which also covers Boston and South Holland. Our grants guide explains who qualifies.
