Sheffield is about 22 miles west of our Retford office, which makes it one of the closest cities we cover.
Sheffield is a hilly city, so which way a roof faces and what shades it can change from one street to the next. That's why we design around your own roof, and an independent technical surveyor checks it in person before anything is fitted.
Semis are the most common home in Sheffield, at 38.0% of households in the 2021 Census, followed by terraces at 26.0%. A terrace has less roof to work with, but the Energy Saving Trust's rough guide still puts it at about four panels for a mid-terrace and eight for an end-terrace or semi.
When we checked in October 2026, Warm Homes Sheffield's page listed solar PV among the measures it offers through the government's Warm Homes: Local Grant. It's for households on lower incomes or means-tested benefits in homes rated EPC D to G, with priority for households with a child aged 16 or under, someone aged 65 or over, or someone with a long-term health condition, and applications go through E.ON. The page doesn't say whether it's taking new applications now, so check with E.ON.
Prices, payback and export payments are much the same across England, so rather than repeat them on every area page, we've written them up once:
What solar panels cost, by system size, and how to compare quotes
Whether solar panels are worth it, with payback figures
Solar panel grants and who qualifies
Battery storage, including adding a battery to existing panels
We're about 22 miles away in Retford. It's a short drive for our team. We start with a free consultation, by phone or at your home in Sheffield, then send a written quote with the full price. If you go ahead, an independent technical surveyor checks the details, then most homes are fitted in a day, and we notify the network operator and send your handover pack afterwards.
What happens on installation day, step by step.
Sheffield City Council handles planning for most of the city, and most houses don't need permission for rooftop solar panels, even in many conservation areas. The main exceptions are listed buildings and the Nether Edge and Broomhill conservation areas, where homes may be covered by an Article 4 direction that means panels on a roof slope facing the road need planning permission. Places such as High and Low Bradfield are in the Peak District National Park, which has its own planning authority.
Where tighter rules can apply
Northern Powergrid runs the local electricity network. Most home systems only need notifying after they're switched on; bigger ones need approval first. We handle both.
The national rules changed on 27 August 2026: planning permission for solar panels has the current limits.

Yes. We're based in Retford, about 22 miles away, and install solar panels and batteries for homeowners across Sheffield.
For some households. Warm Homes Sheffield delivers the government's Warm Homes: Local Grant in the city, and when we checked in October 2026 it listed solar PV among its measures for lower-income homes rated EPC D to G. Everyone else pays for solar themselves, with 0% VAT on home solar panels and batteries until 31 March 2027.
Usually not for a house. Listed buildings need consent, and some installations in conservation areas need permission or prior approval. Sheffield City Council handles planning for most of Sheffield, and we check the position for your address before we quote.
Figures and rules on this page were checked on 11 October 2026. Schemes, tariffs and prices change, so check the latest before you decide.
