A borough of semis

Nearly half of Rotherham households (49.2%) live in semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. That's one of the highest shares of any area we cover, and well above England's 31.5%. A semi usually has one main roof slope at the front and one at the back, so the question is simply which faces closer to south.

If neither faces south, don't rule solar out. East and west-facing roofs produce around 15 to 20% less than south-facing ones, according to the Energy Saving Trust, and a split across both can spread generation through the day.

Sizing a solar system for a semi

Ofgem's figure for a typical household is 2,500 kWh of electricity a year, down from 2,700 kWh before July 2026. By the Energy Saving Trust's rough guide, an end-terrace or semi-detached roof takes about eight panels, and Which? says a 4 kWp system needs at least 20 square metres of roof space. We set the system size from your own energy usage and your roof, so have a recent bill to hand for your consultation. If you have or plan an electric vehicle, an EV charger or a heat pump, tell us, because each raises your use and changes the right system size.

Hillside roofs

Rotherham grew up where the Rother meets the Don, and much of the town sits on the slopes of two hills. On a hillside street, the house above can shade the one below for part of the day, especially in winter when the sun is low.

That's why we check where shadows fall across the year and design around them, and an independent technical surveyor checks the roof in person before anything is fitted.

Is South Yorkshire sunny enough for solar panels?

Yes. Solar panels work on daylight, not just direct sun, and the government's figures show small home solar PV systems in the north holding their own. In its analysis for 2024/25, the North East was among the best-performing regions and London was the lowest. Which? says the south of the UK gets about 20% more solar energy than the far north, but it also says a north-facing roof makes about 30% less than a south-facing one and heavy shade can cost up to 50%, so the roof itself matters at least as much as where you live.

Across the UK, solar ran at a load factor of 11.1% in 2025, the sunniest year in the government's records, and 9.2% in 2024, the dullest. For a 4 kWp system, that works out at very roughly 3,200 to 3,900 kWh a year, more than a typical household uses. These are national averages, and your roof's direction and shade change the figure.

Residential solar PV and battery storage in Rotherham

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system is more than the panels. The panels generate clean electricity from daylight as direct current, an inverter turns it into the alternating current your home runs on, and a generation meter records what the system produces. Battery storage is optional, and it can be added later. Both are popular: MCS recorded 148,531 certified solar installations in the first half of 2026, and 92% of battery installations this year went on homes with solar.

Using your excess electricity

Whatever your panels generate that you don't use straight away goes to the grid, unless a battery stores it first. The Energy Saving Trust points out that export pays around 12p a unit while electricity from the grid costs more than twice that, so using your own solar power is often worth more than selling it. Every unit of solar generation you use at home is one you don't have to buy, which is how solar cuts your energy bills.

A solar battery helps you use more of it. It stores the daytime surplus for the evening, and it can also charge overnight on a cheaper tariff.

How big a solar battery?

8 to 10 kWhof electricity a day, the average home's use, Which? says

Which? says the average home uses 8 to 10 kWh of electricity a day, and that a battery's usable capacity is usually less than its stated size, so compare the usable figure when you look at quotes. What size solar battery do I need?

How a battery connects

MCS recognises two ways to connect battery storage. The battery can have its own inverter, wired into your consumer unit (AC-coupled), or it can connect to the DC side of an inverter it shares with the panels, often called a hybrid inverter (DC-coupled). We recommend the one that suits your system in your quote. We carry out battery installations on new systems and on existing ones, including panels another company fitted.

  • DC-coupledThe DC side of a hybrid inverter it shares with the panels

People often assume a solar and battery system keeps the lights on in a power cut. A standard one won't. The Energy Saving Trust says a battery doesn't normally provide power in a power cut unless extra equipment is fitted and set up for it, so ask us if that matters to you. What a battery costs

Planning in Rotherham

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council handles planning. For most houses, rooftop solar is permitted development, so fitting solar panels in Rotherham usually doesn't need an application. Rotherham Council has 28 conservation areas, and the borough has some notable listed buildings, from the 15th-century Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge to Wentworth Woodhouse.

28

conservation areas in the borough

Listed buildings include

  • The Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge
  • Wentworth Woodhouse
  • Under the rules in force since 27 August 2026, panels on a pitched roof mustn't sit above its highest part, not counting the chimney, or stick out more than 200 mm from the slope.
  • In a conservation area, panels can't go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure facing the road, and flat-roof panels need prior approval.
  • A listed building always needs listed building consent.
  • We check your address against all of these before designing anything.

Paying for solar panels: Rotherham grants, VAT and loans

When we checked in October 2026, Rotherham wasn't on the government's list of councils with Warm Homes: Local Grant funding, and we found no council solar scheme for residents. For most Rotherham homeowners, that means paying for panels outright.

What about free solar panels?

Offers of free solar panels usually mean ECO4, the energy company scheme. Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's energy pages cover ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme. But ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026, suppliers have stopped taking new applications, and the Great British Insulation Scheme ended on 31 March 2026. If someone offers you free panels now, ask which scheme is paying for them.

What solar panels cost

Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own, and you get the full price in writing after a free consultation. The Energy Saving Trust puts a typical 4.5 kWp solar panel system, without a battery, at around £7,600. Home solar panels and batteries are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Government-backed low-interest Warm Homes loans for solar PV and battery storage are due through approved lenders, with no income test and no minimum EPC energy efficiency rating, though none had been named when we checked. It's worth comparing local installers before installing solar panels.

Getting paid: the Smart Export Guarantee

The Smart Export Guarantee pays you for the surplus electricity you send to the grid. Every supplier with 150,000 or more home customers has to offer a tariff, and you can take one from any of them: it doesn't have to be your energy supplier. You'll need a smart meter that records exports, and the installation and installer must be MCS certified.

Rates vary a lot, so compare Smart Export Guarantee payments before you choose a tariff. When we checked in October 2026, Octopus paid 12p a unit on its Outgoing tariff, for its own customers, and 4.1p on its basic tariff open to anyone. How Smart Export Guarantee payments work

How our solar panel installations run

A Rotherham solar panel installation starts with a free consultation, by phone or at your home, where we go through your roof and your energy use. You get a written quote, with no pressure to sign. If you go ahead, an independent technical surveyor checks the roof and the fuse board, and our office orders the kit and books a date. Once the scaffolding is up, most homes are fitted and switched on in a day, and we email your handover pack within 7 working days.

Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid runs the network across South Yorkshire. For most home solar installations, we notify it within 7 working days of switch-on (MCS rules allow 28). Larger systems, or a battery that takes the total inverter output above 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, need its approval before connection, which can take from a couple of days to 90. We apply for that too.

Commercial solar panels: Rotherham and South Yorkshire

Alongside domestic solar, we fit commercial solar for business premises, designed around when you use power, with the return worked out before you commit. In England, rooftop solar and battery storage on business premises are left out of business rates valuations until 31 March 2035. Rotherham Council is the planning authority for the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley.

Questions people ask

How far are you from Rotherham?

About 19 miles. Our office is in Retford, just over the Nottinghamshire border.

Are you MCS certified?

Yes. MCS is the UK quality mark for small-scale renewable energy systems, and we're also RECC and NAPIT members. MCS certification is what qualifies your system for Smart Export Guarantee payments.

Are solar panels worth it without a grant?

It depends on your roof and when you use electricity. The Energy Saving Trust's payback estimates, including export payments, run from about 9 to 12 years.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Rotherham?

For most houses, no. Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's 28 conservation areas have extra rules for walls facing the road and flat roofs, and listed buildings always need consent.

Is there a solar panel grant in Rotherham?

We didn't find one when we checked in October 2026: Rotherham wasn't on the government's Warm Homes: Local Grant list. Panels and batteries for homes are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

How much will solar panels cut my carbon footprint?

The Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical home solar system saves around one tonne of carbon a year. Your figure depends on the size of the system.

Do solar panels work in winter in South Yorkshire?

Yes, they work in the UK climate all year, but they make less in winter. In the government's figures for small home systems, output from October to December 2024 was around a third of April to June.

Will solar work on my hillside house?

Usually, yes. Shade from the slope or the houses above is the main thing to check, and we look at it when we design your system.
