The M1 splits the borough.
East of the M1
East of it, Barnsley is mostly town and former mining villages, where semis are the commonest home: 45.5% of households in the 2021 Census, against 31.5% across England.
West of the M1
West of it, it's rural, hilly and partly inside the Peak District National Park.
The roofs are different too.
East of the M1
In the east we're usually looking at brick semis and terraces with a straightforward pitched roof.
West of the M1
Out west, more homes are stone-built, more exposed and more likely to be in a conservation area, so we look at the roof's condition and the planning position as well as its size and direction.
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council handles planning for most of the borough. Around 9% of it, mostly west of the M1, is inside the Peak District National Park, where the national park authority handles planning instead.
Barnsley has conservation areas in the town and across the borough. In the town, they cover Regent Street, Church Street and Market Hill, Victoria Road and Huddersfield Road. Outside it, they include:
The rules
In a conservation area or the national park, panels can't go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure facing the road, and flat-roof panels need prior approval. Listed buildings always need consent. Everywhere else, most houses don't need planning permission for roof panels.

Barnsley has taken to solar. Energise Barnsley raised £3.3 million in 2024 to fit panels to 1,000 council homes with Berneslai Homes and the council. And the council has £1.5 million of Warm Homes: Local Grant funding, which includes solar panels, for eligible private homes to 2028.
If you qualify for the council's grant, the council arranges the work through its scheme. If you don't, we can quote. Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own, and home solar and batteries are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
Northern Powergrid runs the network in Barnsley. Most home systems are notified after installation; bigger ones, or panels with a large battery, need approval first. We handle it either way.

Our panels were installed less than a week after placing order, and were up and running by the following morning.
