Stone terraces and steep valleys

Terraced houses make up nearly a third of homes across Kirklees (31.5% in the 2021 Census, against 23% for England), many of them stone-built. And Huddersfield is hilly: valley-side streets mean one row of houses can shade the next, and some slopes face away from the sun. None of that stops most Huddersfield homeowners installing solar panels, but it shapes the design.

Which way your roof faces matters more here than in flatter towns. Which? puts the loss at about 15% for a roof facing east or west rather than south, about 30% for one facing north, and up to 50% for a heavily shaded roof. A typical 4.5 kWp home system covers 20 to 30 square metres of roof, according to the Energy Saving Trust, so on a narrow terrace the question is often which slope gives the best mix of space and sun.

  • We check the roof's condition and structure as well as its size, because older stone-built roofs vary.
  • We look at where shade falls through the year, not just on one day.
  • On a shaded or split roof, optimisers or microinverters can stop one shaded panel holding back the others.

The MCS installation standard requires a competent person to check that the roof structure can carry the panels, and a structural engineer for unusual roofs or where there's any doubt. On an old stone house, the technical survey checks this before anything is fitted.

3,200 to 3,900 kWh

Ofgem's typical figure for a medium user is 2,500 units (kWh) of electricity a year, from July 2026. Using the government's national load factors for 2024 and 2025, a 4 kWp solar system makes roughly 3,200 to 3,900 kWh a year (national averages, so your roof will differ). Your own electricity bill is a better guide to your use than any average, and so are your plans: heat pumps and EV charging at home both raise it, and a bigger system then makes more sense. We design the system around your roof and your specific energy needs.

Planning in Huddersfield

Kirklees Council handles planning, and Kirklees has 59 conservation areas, including Huddersfield Town Centre, Edgerton and Almondbury. Almost every building around St George's Square is listed, including the station, which John Betjeman called "the most splendid station façade in England".

For most houses, solar panels on the roof are permitted development, so there's no planning application. Since 27 August 2026 the national rules say panels on a pitched roof can stick out no more than 0.2 metres from the slope and can't sit above the highest part of the roof, chimneys aside.

In a conservation area, panels can't go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure facing the road, and flat-roof panels need prior approval. Listed buildings always need consent.

The Peak District edge. The south-west corner of Kirklees lies in the Peak District National Park. There the park authority, not Kirklees, decides planning, and panels on a flat roof need its prior approval. If you're out towards Holme and the moors, tell us when you get in touch.

What solar panels cost in Huddersfield

  • Energy Saving Trust average

    £7,600

The Energy Saving Trust puts the average home solar panel installation at around £7,600, for a system of about 4.5 kWp without a battery. Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own. The price of a solar panel installation on your house depends on the system size, the roof, the scaffolding it needs and whether you add a battery.

  • Until 31 March 2027

    0% VAT

Home solar panels and batteries are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate goes back to 5%. Which? says installation quotes include the labour, the mounting system and the scaffolding. Ours is written, with the full price and no hidden costs, and there's no pressure to sign. The zero rate only applies when the installer both supplies and installs the system, so kit you buy to fit yourself doesn't qualify.

Cutting your energy bills

From October to December 2026, the price cap rate for electricity is 26.32p per unit on average. Every unit your panels make and you use at home is one you don't buy from the grid at that price, so your savings depend on self-consumption: how much of your solar power you use yourself rather than export.

  • £190 to £330 a year

    Using it at home.

MoneySavingExpert, quoting the Energy Saving Trust, puts the cut to a typical electricity bill from a 4.5 kWp system at £190 to £330 a year, before any export payments.

  • 1p to 25p a unit

    Exporting the rest.

Under the Smart Export Guarantee, suppliers pay you for surplus electricity you send to the grid. Which? found rates from 1p to 25p a unit in April 2026. You need an MCS certified installation to claim.

  • 10 to 11 years

    Payback.

The Energy Saving Trust's nearest example is Manchester, just over the Pennines, where it puts payback at 10 to 11 years. It expects panels to last 25 years or more, so the investment keeps paying after that.

Running costs are low. The main one is the inverter, which MoneySavingExpert says will likely need replacing within about 10 years, at around £800. The Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical system saves around one tonne of carbon emissions a year, which cuts your household's carbon footprint.

Home battery storage in Huddersfield

Solar panels make most of their power in the middle of the day, when many homeowners are out. A solar battery stores what you don't use and runs your evenings on it, so more of your own renewable energy stays in the house. The Energy Saving Trust puts a 5 kWh battery system at around £4,600, says a typical home system is about 10 kWh, and expects a battery to last about 10 to 12 years.

Adding a battery to existing solar panels

If you already have solar PV, we can add a solar battery to it, even if another company fitted the original system. A battery retrofitted to existing solar panels is also 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Where the battery goes

The fire safety standard for home batteries, PAS 63100, says batteries should go outdoors where practicable, and not in a loft, a bedroom, or on the stairs, landings or hallway you'd use to get out. In a stone terrace with no garage, that takes some thought, and we work it out with you before anything is fitted.

See adding a battery to existing panels for more.

Grants and help with the cost

VAT on home solar and batteries0% until 31 March 2027

Solar panels and batteries fitted to homes carry no VAT until 31 March 2027, whether or not you qualify for a grant.

Choosing a solar panel installer in Huddersfield

Plenty of solar installers work across West Yorkshire. Before installing solar panels with any of them, these checks protect you:

  • MCS certification. It's the UK quality mark for small-scale renewables, and it covers both the installer and the installation. Without an MCS certified installer and installation, you can't get paid for exported electricity under the Smart Export Guarantee.
  • A consumer code. The Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) advises paying a deposit of no more than 25% of the price when you sign. We take no deposit at all.
  • Electrical work signed off. Solar PV is notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so make sure your installer can certify it.
  • A written quote. Compare competitive quotes like for like: system size, panels, inverter, scaffolding and any battery.

Do you need a local installer?

Not necessarily. What matters more is that the installer gives you a written quote, checks your roof in person before fitting and is there afterwards if anything needs looking at. We're 41 miles away in Retford, and the distance doesn't change the quality of the installation or the service: James puts your proposal together, and your system is installed to the same standard as anywhere else we work.

A family-run business in Retford

As a family-run business, we've been in solar since 2010, and we cover homes across Yorkshire, within 100 miles of Doncaster. We're MCS certified and members of RECC and NAPIT, and we're rated 4.8 out of 5 from 36 reviews on Trustpilot and 5.0 from 6 on Google. You can read what some of our customers say below.

From first call to switch-on

  1. Free consultation.

By phone or at your home. We go through your electricity use and check shade and planning for your address.

  2. Written quote.

The full price for a system sized to your energy needs, with honest advice and no pressure to sign.

  3. Technical survey.

Once you've signed, an independent technical surveyor checks your roof, your fuse board and where the panels and cables will go.

  4. Paperwork.

Our office orders the kit and books a date that suits you. Systems over 3.68 kW need the network operator's consent first, which can take from a couple of days to 90.

  5. Installation day.

Our installation team fits most homes in a day once the scaffolding is up, with the system wired in and switched on.

  6. Handover.

Once your system is installed, we notify the network and email your handover pack within 7 working days.

  7. Aftercare.

We stay on hand for ongoing support, to answer questions and help if anything needs looking at.

The whole process usually takes two to three weeks from the first call to switch-on. Bigger systems that need network approval can take longer.

Getting connected

Northern Powergrid runs the network in Huddersfield. Most home systems, up to 3.68 kW per phase, only need notifying, and we do it within 7 working days of switch-on (the rules allow 28). Larger systems need Northern Powergrid's approval first. We handle both.

Your questions about solar panels in Huddersfield

Will solar work on a Huddersfield terrace?

Usually, yes. Terraced roofs are smaller, and valley shade is the main thing to check, and we look at it when we design your system.

How much does it cost to have solar panels installed?

The Energy Saving Trust puts the average at around £7,600 for a 4.5 kWp system without a battery. Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own, and home solar is 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Huddersfield?

For most houses, no. Kirklees has 59 conservation areas with extra rules, listed buildings always need consent, and the south-west of the borough is in the Peak District National Park.

Which company is best for solar panel installation in Huddersfield?

There's no single best. Check the installer is MCS certified and in a consumer code such as RECC, read recent reviews, and compare written quotes like for like.

Can you add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Yes, including systems another company fitted. A battery added to existing panels is 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Are there grants for solar panels in Huddersfield?

Kirklees wasn't on the government's list of councils with Warm Homes: Local Grant funding when we checked in October 2026. Solar panels and batteries fitted to homes are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, whether or not you qualify for a grant.

Do solar panels work in a Pennine winter?

Yes, but they make less. The Energy Saving Trust says panels still generate on cloudy days, and produce less in winter because the days are shorter, cloudier and the sunlight is weaker.

Do solar panels add value to a Huddersfield home?

Which? found most estate agents say solar panels don't usually add to a home's value, but can make it easier to sell. Solar Energy UK's analysis puts the uplift at 0.9% to 2%.

How far are you from Huddersfield?

About 41 miles from our Retford office.
