Big skies, open roofs

Grimsby and Cleethorpes sit low and flat on the south bank of the Humber, so there are few hills to shade a roof. What there is instead is exposure: wind off the estuary and the North Sea.

That matters for how panels are fixed. MCS installation rules require structural and wind-loading checks, and on exposed sites the technical survey pays particular attention to the fixings and the roof's condition before anything is fitted.

Terraced houses and solar

Terraces are common here: 31.6% of North East Lincolnshire households live in one, according to the 2021 Census, against 23% across England. A terrace usually has a smaller roof, but a mid-terrace can still take around four panels, and an end-terrace about eight, by the Energy Saving Trust's rough guide.

  • Rear slopes and back extensions often face a better direction than the front.
  • Chimneys, dormers and roof lights reduce the usable area, so the technical survey measures on site.
  • A small system still cuts what you buy, and a battery can help you use more of it.

Planning in Grimsby and Cleethorpes

North East Lincolnshire Council handles planning, and it isn't affected by the 2028 reorganisation of the Lincolnshire councils. For most houses, roof panels don't need planning permission.

The borough has around 16 conservation areas, including Central Grimsby, Wellow, Old Clee, Great Coates, Cleethorpes Central Seafront and Humberston Fitties. Central Grimsby's are mostly tightly packed three and four-storey red-brick terraces with slate roofs. In conservation areas, panels can't go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure facing the road, and flat-roof panels need prior approval. Listed buildings, like the Grade I Dock Tower, always need consent.

Local schemes

North East Lincolnshire Council has run council-backed group-buying schemes for solar and batteries two years running, in 2025 and 2026. Registration for the 2026 round closed on 24 July 2026. The council is also part of the Midlands Net Zero Hub group delivering the Warm Homes: Local Grant for lower-income households.

If neither fits, we'll quote. Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own, and home solar and batteries are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Questions people ask

Do you install solar panels in Grimsby and Cleethorpes?

Yes. Grimsby is about 39 miles from our Retford office, and we cover the whole of North East Lincolnshire.

Can I have solar panels on a terraced house?

Usually, yes. A mid-terrace can often take around four panels and an end-terrace about eight. The rear slope or a back extension is often the best spot.

Do I need planning permission in Grimsby?

For most houses, no. Conservation areas such as Central Grimsby and Cleethorpes Central Seafront have extra rules, and listed buildings always need consent.

Does the wind off the coast matter?

It affects how panels are fixed, not whether you can have them. MCS rules require wind-loading checks, and we take extra care with fixings on exposed roofs.
