Mansfield is a town of houses. In the 2021 Census, 90% of households in Mansfield district lived in a house rather than a flat, well above the England figure of 77%. Most are semis (43%) and detached houses (30%). That usually means a roof of your own, with room for a worthwhile solar system.
As a rough guide, the Energy Saving Trust says a semi-detached roof takes about eight panels, a small detached house about 12 and a large one about 16. We work out what fits before we quote, and an independent technical surveyor checks it in person before anything is fitted. On a typical semi, the main question is which slope faces closest to south and how much of it is free of chimneys, vents and skylights.
Mansfield sits in the Maun Valley on the edge of Sherwood Forest, and the ground rises to around 190 m in places. Mature trees and rising ground can cast shade across a roof, and the shadows are longest in winter, when the sun stays low. Panels still generate electricity on cloudy days, just less of it.
When we design your system, we check where shade falls across the year. If part of your roof is shaded, panel optimisers or microinverters can stop one shaded panel holding back the power from the rest. If they'd add cost without much benefit on your roof, we'll say so. When optimisers are worth it

Solar is a long-term investment, so it's worth knowing how much money it could save. The sums depend on three things: how much of your roof faces south, east or west, how much power you use while the sun is up, and what you're paid for the rest. We work them out for your home in your quote, not from a national average. There's the environmental impact too: the Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical home system cuts carbon emissions by around one tonne a year.
The Energy Saving Trust puts the average home solar PV system at about 4.5 kWp, roughly 12 panels, costing around £7,600. Quoting the Trust, MoneySavingExpert says a system that size cuts energy bills by about £190 to £330 a year at price cap rates, before export payments. The Trust's payback estimates run from about 9 to 12 years across its example locations. Manchester, the closest of them to Mansfield, comes out at 10 to 11 years.
Under the Smart Export Guarantee, a licensed electricity supplier pays you for every unit you send to the grid. Basic tariffs open to anyone pay around 1p to 6p a unit, while tariffs for a supplier's own customers pay about 12p to 15p. To qualify, the installation and the installer must be MCS certified, and ours are.
The main maintenance cost is the inverter, the equipment that turns the panels' power into electricity your home can use. The Energy Saving Trust says it usually needs replacing after around 12 years, while the panels themselves should last 25 years or more. Our panels come with a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty. Are solar panels worth it? The full numbers
From first call to switch-on, a solar panel installation usually takes two to three weeks. Bigger systems that need network approval can take longer. Here's what happens in between.
By phone or at your Mansfield home. We go through your energy use and check for shade and planning limits.
You get the full price in writing, talked through with you, with no pressure to sign.
Once you've signed, an independent technical surveyor checks the roof's condition, the fuse board and where the panels and cables will go. MCS rules require the roof structure to be checked before panels go on.
Our office orders the equipment and books a date that suits you. If your system needs the network operator's approval, we apply first.
Once the scaffolding is up, most homes are fitted and switched on in a day, with a generation meter so you can see what the panels produce.
We notify the network operator and email your handover pack within 7 working days.
National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the local network for Mansfield and the rest of the East Midlands. Most home systems connect on a "fit and notify" basis, and we tell the network within 7 working days of switch-on (the rules allow 28). Bigger systems, above 3.68 kW of inverter output on an ordinary single-phase supply, need its approval before they're connected, which can take from a couple of days to 90. We handle both. Run a business in the town? As well as domestic systems, we fit commercial solar for business premises.
For most Mansfield houses, solar panels on the roof are permitted development and don't need planning permission. Mansfield District Council is the local authority for planning, and it has 11 conservation areas, where extra rules apply:
In a conservation area, panels can't go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure facing the road, and panels on a flat roof need prior approval. A listed building always needs listed building consent. An Article 4 direction also covers a few cottages in Pleasley Vale: for those homes, solar panels that can be seen from a road, waterway or public open space need planning permission. We check your address before designing anything.

The government has decided Mansfield will move into a new "Nottinghamshire Council" on 1 April 2028, subject to Parliament. Until then, Mansfield District Council handles planning.
Battery storage keeps the electricity your panels make during the day so you can use it in the evening. If you're out at work all day and buy most of your electricity after dark, it's worth pricing one. The Energy Saving Trust says a typical home battery is around 10 kWh, lasts about 10 to 12 years, and can go in a garage, a utility room or on an outside wall of your property. We'll agree where the installation goes with you before anything is fitted.
We do battery installations alongside new panels, and we can install a battery on panels Mansfield homes already have, including systems fitted by other companies. So you don't have to future-proof everything on day one: start with panels and add storage to the solar system later if your use changes, for example with an electric car. Adding a battery to existing panels
Before you invest, a few checks on the solar panel installers you're comparing will protect you:
Mansfield District Council gets Warm Homes: Local Grant funding through the Midlands Net Zero Hub, and the scheme runs to March 2028. Nationally the grant can pay for solar panels, but Mansfield's council said in October 2025 that it would spend the first year on insulation and consider solar PV for later years, so ask the council what's on offer now. Eligibility is set nationally: you own your home or rent it privately, it has an EPC energy efficiency rating of D to G, and your household has an income of £36,000 or less, gets a means-tested benefit, or lives in one of the most deprived postcodes. You apply through GOV.UK.
Not eligible for a grant? Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own, and panels and batteries for homes are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, when the rate goes back to 5%. Yes. We install across Mansfield district, including Mansfield Woodhouse, Forest Town, Market Warsop and Church Warsop.
Usually not. Listed buildings need consent, and Mansfield's 11 conservation areas have extra rules for walls facing the road and flat roofs. We check your address first.
Our solar and battery systems start from £7,500 fully installed (10 panels, a Fox ESS battery and scaffolding to one side), or from £4,995 for solar panels on their own. An average 4.5 kWp home solar PV system, without a battery, costs around £7,600 according to the Energy Saving Trust, and Which? says quotes normally include labour, mounting and scaffolding. Yes, usually, even if another company fitted them. We ask about your current setup before we quote.
