What we install in York

Planning permission in York

York has 35 conservation areas, and the York Central Historic Core Conservation Area is one of the largest and most complex in England. City of York Council says planning permission isn't usually needed for panels on the roof of a house in a conservation area, but it is for panels on a wall facing the road, and listed buildings need listed building consent. Some streets also have Article 4 directions, and the council offers a householder enquiry service, for a £120 fee, to check your permitted development rights.

Northern Powergrid runs the local electricity network. Most home systems only need notifying after they're switched on; bigger ones need approval first. We handle both.

The national rules changed on 27 August 2026: planning permission for solar panels has the current limits.

Solar panels in York: questions people ask

Do you install solar panels in York?

Yes. We're based in Retford, about 44 miles away, and install solar panels and batteries for homeowners across York.

Is there a solar panel grant in York?

For some households. City of York Council has Warm Homes: Local Grant funding, which can pay for solar PV in lower-income homes rated EPC D to G. Everyone else pays for solar themselves, with 0% VAT on home solar panels and batteries until 31 March 2027.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in York?

Usually not for a house. Listed buildings need consent, and some installations in conservation areas need permission or prior approval. City of York Council handles planning for most of York, and we check the position for your address before we quote.
