Manchester is about 55 miles west of our Retford office, across the Pennines. We install solar panels and batteries for homeowners across Manchester and Salford.
Manchester's weather has a reputation, but it doesn't rule solar out. The Energy Saving Trust uses Manchester as one of its example locations and puts the payback for its example system there at about 10 to 11 years, including export payments, depending on how much you're at home in the day.
Semis and terraces make up most of the houses in both cities: in the 2021 Census, 32% of Manchester households lived in a semi and 28% in a terrace, and in Salford it was 35% and 25%. Flats are common too, with 35% of Manchester households and 30% of Salford's living in a flat or other building.
When we checked in October 2026, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme listed solar PV and battery storage among its measures. It's for owner-occupied and privately rented homes rated EPC D to G where the household meets an income, benefit or postcode test, and you apply through the GMCA Retrofit Portal.
Prices, payback and export payments are much the same across England, so rather than repeat them on every area page, we've written them up once:
We're about 55 miles away in Retford. Being further from our office doesn't change how we work. We start with a free consultation, by phone or at your home in Manchester, then send a written quote with the full price. If you go ahead, an independent technical surveyor checks the details, then most homes are fitted in a day, and we notify the network operator and send your handover pack afterwards.
What happens on installation day, step by step.Homes in Manchester come under Manchester City Council for planning, and homes in Salford under Salford City Council. Most houses don't need permission for roof panels. The exceptions are listed buildings and conservation areas: Manchester's include Castlefield, St Ann's Square and Chorlton Green, and Salford has 16, which the council is reviewing. We check your address before we quote.

Electricity North West runs the local electricity network. Most home systems only need notifying after they're switched on; bigger ones need approval first. We handle both.
The national rules changed on 27 August 2026: planning permission for solar panels has the current limits.

Usually not for a house. Listed buildings need consent, and some installations in conservation areas need permission or prior approval. Manchester City Council handles planning for most of Manchester, and we check the position for your address before we quote.
